Bangladeshi worers cannot go abroad without insurance

At present, Bangladeshi women are undergoing training to go abroad.

The state-owned life insurance corporation has started compulsory insurance for workers from Bangladesh who go to work abroad.

At present, many Bangladeshi workers in different parts of the world who work in the workplace with various risks do not get any insurance benefits. According to the Life Insurance Corporation, an agreement has been reached with the concerned authorities to insure expatriate workers for them.

Dr Shelina Afroza, chairman of the Life Insurance Corporation, told BBC Bangla that the government's new policy has made it compulsory for any worker going abroad to work under insurance.

"Before going to work abroad, a worker has to take out a permit from the Wage Earner Welfare Board to insure the worker. Without insurance, he cannot go abroad."

Dr Afroza said migrant workers would have to be insured with a one-time fixed amount of money, which would be effective for two years.

"A one-time premium of Rs 990 will be paid by the Wage Earner Welfare Board and the rest will be paid to anyone who wants to go abroad," said Dr Afroza.

The Wage Earner Welfare Board will then coordinate all the information of the workers who want to go abroad with the Life Insurance Corporation through software. The Life Insurance Corporation will then issue a certificate to the migrant worker, making him an insured.

Dr. Afrozar commented, "This will enable a migrant worker to be insured with a single click."

Besides, if the migrant workers want to insure a larger amount, they also have the opportunity, said the chairman of the Life Insurance Corporation.

With this insurance, if the expatriate worker dies naturally or due to an accident, becomes completely paralyzed or becomes blind due to an accident within two years, he will get a full premium of Rs. 200,000.

Shelina Afroza said that Bangladeshi workers who are currently abroad can also insure themselves by sending their representatives or by contacting the Life Insurance Corporation.

'Employers should bear the burden of insurance'

While applauding the government's decision to make insurance compulsory for migrant workers, Sumaiya Islam, executive director of the Bangladesh Nari Sramik Kendra, said the terms and conditions of the insurance should be changed.

He thinks that the insurance premium should not be taken from the workers but from the employers.

"Since workers are allowed to go abroad with a certain amount of money to the Wage Earner Board, it is the responsibility of them and the employer to bear the burden of insurance."

Sumaiya Islam commented that in the case of Bangladeshi workers, it is seen that most of them do not know about the insurance process, rules for getting insurance money and insurance policy. So it is often seen that the money due to the worker does not reach him.

However, under the laws of some countries, no organization in that country can insure migrant workers. Sumaiya Islam commented that it is possible to solve this problem through bilateral talks at the government level.

He also said that workers who go abroad and are cheated and do not get paid properly should be given insurance money to bring the employers under Liability.
